On Friday, Governor Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency. This verbal declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to take all necessary and appropriate actions to assist with response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. This support includes engines and hand crews to assist in containment efforts, DFPC aerial resources, and the DFPC-sponsored Type 3 Incident Management Team to manage incident response efforts.
Current Situation: Crews continue to make good progress on containment lines, utilizing handlines where heavy equipment could cause resource damage. Minimal dozer line, as well as continued aviation support, continue to be utilized. Crews remain focused on achieving containment objectives while strengthening and securing fire lines.
Weather: The forecast continues to call for very hot and dry conditions. Relative humidities are expected to fall into single digits again today with a slight chance of scattered showers throughout the weekend.
Fire Behavior: The southeast corner of the fire remains active, showing smoldering and creeping behavior in brush-model fuels, with occasional torching and no timber involvement. In the southwest corner, fire activity persists with smoldering and creeping behavior, where mopping up and securing the containment line is ongoing. Activity on the north side of the perimeter is moderated, with only isolated heat sources detected.
Fire Restrictions: Stage 2 Fire Restrictions remain in effect throughout Garfield County, and on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the White River National Forest. All open fires are prohibited to help reduce the risk of wildfire ignition and spread.
