115 Fire
Glenwood Springs, Colo – At 12:46 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, Glenwood Springs Fire Department was called to a brush fire located along westbound I-70, near mile marker 115.
Upon arrival, firefighters found three individual fires spaced a quarter-mile apart, burning in grass and brush on the north side of I-70. Firefighters immediately began extinguishment efforts. On the westernmost fire, firefighters were joined by local passerbys who contributed to extinguishment efforts with the use of their fire extinguishers. The two eastern fires quickly merged. The fires totaled 1 acre in size by the time they were contained, which took less than 30 minutes.
Five engines, two water trucks, and four command vehicles with 21 firefighters from Colorado River Fire Rescue, Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire (UCR) assisted with this incident. A helicopter from UCR led reconnaissance efforts. Additionally, 15 personnel from Colorado State Patrol, Garfield County Sheriff, Colorado Department of Transportation, Glenwood Springs Police Department, and City of Glenwood Springs Public Works responded to this incident.
Incident Commander, Harlan Nimmo, said, “Quick response from multiple agencies and locals stopped this fire in its tracks. We appreciate our partners and their support.”
The Garfield County Fire Investigation Team investigated the cause of this fire and determined that sparks from chains started this fire.
